History of Dobson’s Trim and Canvas
Darryl and Jenny Dobson took over a small Motor Trimming and Canvas Business from Darryl’s father Jack Dobson approximately 17 years ago. Jack originally started the business in 1949 after serving time as a fabricator in World War II, packing parachutes. When a localsupermarket needed to expand, it gave Jack an opportunity to relocate the business to a new address across the road. At the time, this new building was thought to be huge, and it served its purpose for many years. However Darryl
and Jenny eventually outgrew this building too, as the business expanded even further. They were operating as Canvas Workers,
Motor Trimmers, Furniture Upholsters, 0800 Sunshade as well as Marquee Hire and Party Hire. These all operated under the umbrella of Dobsons Trim and Canvas Ltd.In September 2003 Darryl and Jenny managed to relocate their business to a brand new purpose built workshop with offices and a marquee storage shed at 149 Glover Road, Hawera. This was a huge commitment for them to undertake. Every facet of the business had to have its own area. Some of the key features are 12m lay up benches to operate various types of welding machines, sewing machines in a clean area, and the space to have several vehicles, boats, trucks and tents stored and worked on at the same time. Truck and trailer units can drive through without having to turn around. Marquee Hire has its own storage shed with internal cleaning area attached. In October 2005, another leap forward was made. The marquee hire side of the business had grown to a point where it could be run as a separate entity. Out of this, Dobsons Marquee & Party Hire Ltd was born. A new shop was opened at 90 Gill Street, New Plymouth and now both businesses are able to operate from two locations within the Taranaki region.
Over the years Darryl and Jenny have seen many changes. Their business is forever growing and moving ahead to produce new quality products with the latest technology and with excellent client servicing. They have a full complement of skilled staff. Darryl and Jenny then purchased land and built a large building for both companies to reside, at 13 Oropuriri Street, Waiwhakaiho, New Plymouth.
